Tushar
sodium borohydride alone cannot do the job of reducing ester. But,
lithiumborohydride or calcium borohydride will do the job perfectly. Even
Zincborohydride may do the job. All these borohydrids can be prepared insitu
from sodiumborohydride and respective chloride salt at 0 deg C. you will be
able find procedures for lithium/calcium/zinc borohydride easily in Leo
Packet's Encylopedea of reagents in org syn or primary literatue articles.
Though the duration of reaction may be little longer than lithium aluminum
hydride based reduction, the yields are comparable. two eqs of DIBAL-H at -20
deg C will also do the job in less than two hours.
cheers
