(1) Postdoctoral Position in Synthetic Organic Chemistry

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research position, forming part
of the EC RTN network:
"Selective Formation and Biochemistry of Oxidative DNA
Damage" (
This Network, which comprises 8 institutions in 7 countries, is dedicated
to understanding, at the cellular / biochemical / chemical level, the
potential for oxidatively induced clustered DNA damage, i.e. multiple DNA
lesions formed within about one helical turn of the DNA, and tandem
lesions, to compromise the cell's ability to maintain the stability of the
The successful candidate will be expected to possess a strong expertise in
synthetic organic chemistry. Experience in the chemistry of modified
nucleosides and oligonucleotides will be highly desirable although not
necessary. S/he will be working at the Athens node in close interaction
with the Bologna, Valencia and Grenoble nodes. The position is available
starting Fall 2004. The post will be for a period of one year with the
possibility of extension for another 1-2 years subject to performance and
availability of funding.

Eligibility Criteria (You can check your eligibility at

(1) The successful candidate is a person who either has a PhD or at least
four years full time equivalent research experience, and who does not yet
have 10 years full time equivalent research experience. The clock starts
ticking at the date when the applicant has received the qualification
enabling her/him to embark on doctoral studies in her/his country (i.e. in
Germany the "Diplom", in Spain the "Licenciatura", in France the "DEA", in
the UK the Masters Degree etc).
(2) Researchers from member states and associated countries (see for an updated list of
associated countries) other than Greece are of course eligible. Researchers
who have been residing in a member state, other than Greece, for at least
four out of the last five years prior to the appointment are considered as
if they were from an EU member state and are also eligible. Up to 30% of
person months (of the network total) can be offered to third country
researchers, i.e. for example people who have never in their life set foot
in a European country - people coming straight from China, the US, Russia,
anywhere. The above researcher should not have been living in Greece for
more than 12 months out of the last 36 months (beginning of fellowship).
(3) Greek researchers are also eligible if they have been residing outside
the EU and associated states for at least 4 out of the last 5 years prior
to their appointment. For example, if a Greek person has left to the USA
four years ago, then s/he can apply for this job in this RTN in Greece,
despite being Greek. Or if a Greek person has left to Australia five years
ago, has then come back to Europe to work in France for a year, then this
person can also be hired by this RTN in Greece, because s/he has spent four
out of the last five years in Australia.

The salary will be paid in accordance with local regulations on the scale
of ~50.000 euro per annum (gross sum) with the net amount being around
50-70 % of that amount depending on family status and cross-national
regulations. Applications should be e-mailed (gimisis$##$ and
should include a full CV, publication list, summary of current research
interests and the names and addresses of three referees. Deadline: 12/2004.
